Overview

An 8-week strategy and design engagement focused on reimagining an internal audit function within a large, highly regulated financial institution. The project explored how emerging technologies—particularly GenAI and automation—could improve auditor experience, reduce manual effort, and enable more proactive, insight-driven risk management.

Working within a cross-functional squad alongside audit experts, strategists, and subject-matter specialists, I helped design the future state of internal audit operations—transforming how auditors work and enabling them to focus on higher-value analysis and strategic decision-making.

Problem

How might we leverage emerging technologies such as GenAI to redesign the internal audit experience—shifting auditors from manual, reactive work to higher-value analysis and decision-making?

Design Challenge

Internal auditors spend significant time on repetitive, manual tasks such as data gathering, documentation review, and report generation. This leaves limited capacity for strategic risk analysis and proactive insights that could drive real business value.

Approach

The project followed a structured service design methodology, moving from deep discovery through to validated future-state concepts and implementation planning.

Four-phase approach:

Research & Context:

Industry and market research on audit, risk, and AI trends, plus deep dive into internal risk frameworks and operating models

Current State Analysis:

End-to-end process and journey mapping, user interviews with auditors, and identification of key pain points

Target State Design:

Personas for core audit roles, future-state journeys and service concepts, wireframes, high-fidelity designs, and conceptual prototypes

Socialisation:

Visual storytelling to align stakeholders and support executive decision-making

01

Manual work dominates

Auditors spend 60-70% of their time on data gathering, manual reviews, and administrative tasks rather than strategic analysis

02

Fragmented systems

Critical information lives across disconnected tools and databases, requiring significant effort to compile and validate

03

Reactive posture

Current processes focus on backward-looking compliance checks rather than forward-looking risk insights

These insights revealed a clear opportunity: by automating routine tasks and centralizing data, we could free auditors to focus on analysis, judgment, and proactive risk management.

Key Contributions

As the UX/UI designer on this engagement, I played a central role in translating research insights into tangible design artifacts and strategic recommendations.

Design deliverables:

Created and refined personas grounded in research and user interviews with internal auditors

Co-developed a "Golden Thread" connecting current workflows, user pain points, and future-state vision

Designed wireframes and high-fidelity screens in Figma using an enterprise design system

Built a visual initiative roadmap to communicate prioritisation, dependencies, and rollout strategy

Supported workshop preparation and facilitation using Mural for collaborative ideation and synthesis

Conceptual dashboard showing AI-assisted audit insights and automated data aggregation

Design & Prototyping

Working within the constraints of a highly regulated enterprise environment, I designed interfaces that balanced innovation with compliance requirements. The design system needed to feel modern and efficient while respecting existing brand guidelines and security protocols.

Design principles:

Clarity and trust through consistent enterprise design patterns

Progressive disclosure to surface AI-generated insights without overwhelming users

Human-centered automation that keeps auditors in control of critical decisions

Collaborative workshop sessions with audit stakeholders

Service design artifacts and journey mapping

Outcome & Impact

The engagement successfully delivered a comprehensive vision for AI-enabled internal audit, complete with validated concepts, prototypes, and an actionable implementation roadmap. The work enabled stakeholder alignment across the organization and secured executive buy-in for moving forward with an MVP.
